A soft, rounded Sauvignon Blanc with lush fruit. Pencarrow is the second-tier label of Palliser Estate, but this is a satisfying wine in its own right. More openly accessible, and if anything more up-front in flavour.

review Palliser Pencarrow Sauvignon Blanc 2023Cameron Douglas MS: 90/100.  A distinctive bouquet with fresh apple and citrus, tropical fruits with a hay and fresh herb qualities. Crisp, firm and just dry as the wine touches the palate, flavours of apple and cape gooseberry, grapefruit and a moderate herbaceous quality deliver a wine of freshness and style. Acidity is naturally higher with a soft saline note adding breadth and texture across the palate. Well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through end of summer 2026.

Tasting note

Exquisitely expressive nose showing passionfruit, orange blossom, apple, nettle and pink grapefruit with a hint of musk. Crisp, dry and bracingly refreshing, the palate is generous and layered with a long mouthwatering finish. A classic Kiwi, cool-climate Sauvignon, showcasing the Martinborough style.

Additional information

Varial: 100% Sauvignon Blanc

Food matching: Best enjoyed in the flush of youth, this is great as an aperitif or pesto, chimichurri, goats cheese, pan-fried fish, green-lipped mussels or oysters. The coriander, Thai basil and mint notes found in Vietnamese cuisine are also an excellent match.

Vineyards: Martinborough, New Zealand. 91% of the fruit from the Woolshed vineyard the balance from Pencarrow vineyard.

Winemaking: The fruit is harvested and gently crushed to tank, cold settled over 2 days and racked to tank and fermented leaving 5g/litre of residual sugar giving added weight and texture to the wine. The wine then spends a further 3 months on lees before bottling.

Label design: The label pays tribute to the famous Pencarrow Lighthouse on the Palliser coast. It also pays homage to Mary Jane Bennett, whose lighthouse keeper husband died in 1855, leaving her to raise six children alone and run the lighthouse herself. This was a first for a woman in New Zealand in those pioneering days. She held the position for 10 years.
